10-26-2025 - A Cure for Heart Trouble
Text: John 14:1-6
So many people today have troubled hearts. I’m not talking about the disease that affects the physical function of our heart but rather the unrest we feel within our being that causes worry and anxiety. This is nothing new. Today, people are troubled over world events, the moral decline, and the increased violence. While He was on earth, Jesus spoke of world events and trouble in Luke 21:23-28; moral decline in Matthew 24:12, and the increase in violence in Matthew 24:37-38. After 2,000 years, not much has changed. How many of us stress over our financial situation, health issues, or problems within our own households? Today I’m here to tell you to stop stressing and worrying. Anytime something starts to trouble our heart, we can look to Jesus.
Our text comes from John 14:1-6 where Jesus said: “ (1) Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. (2) In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. (3) And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you unto Myself; that where I am, there you may be also. (4) And where I go you know, and the way you know. (5) Thomas said unto Him, Lord, we know not where You go; and how can we know the way? (6) Jesus said unto him, I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life; no man comes unto the Father, but by me.”
This conversation Jesus had with His disciples came at a time when they were very troubled about the situation around them. We learn in John 13 that Jesus told them how one of them would soon betray Jesus, that they would all soon be separated from Him, and that Peter would soon deny Him. So of course their hearts were very unsettled with all this bad news.
His words to His much-loved Disciples can comfort us all these years later. Yes, one of them would fail Him but Jesus is always faithful and never fails us. One among them would turn out to be a liar but Jesus is always honest and truthful with us. One would soon witness death, but Jesus is the source of life for all who trust Him. Jesus told them that day to keep their hearts focused on Him and they would find peace. What Jesus told them in that upper room so long ago is just as true for us today. Isaiah tells us in 26:3 that when we keep our hearts and minds on Him and trust Him, He will keep us in perfect peace.
The Disciples were obviously worried about death and what happens afterward. Jesus’ words to them also bring comfort us, We know from what Jesus said that the way to eternal life, though physically unseen, is secure for us when we trust Him with the future. He has already prepared the way to eternal life. The only issue that may still be resolved is our willingness to believe Him.
What lies beyond death is a question that everyone asks themselves. Jesus has the answer for all everyone, especially those with uncertain hearts. And even with the reassurances of Jesus in v. 2 that there are places in His Father’s house that He is preparing for us and in v. 3 will take us there, there are still those “doubting Thomases” in v. 4 that are uncertain of what happens when this life is over. Thomas didn’t want to miss out on Heaven. He wanted to be with Jesus forever and live in one of those mansions. He expected a path to take but instead got a person that is Jesus.
Verses 5 and 6 contain the most basic and important passage in Scripture because it opens the door for all doubters to come to Jesus. In v. 5 Thomas is asking, “How can we know the way to God?” It’s knowing Jesus that gives certainty to all those who believe and trust in Him of what will happen to them when they die. He said in v. 6 that “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life; not man comes unto the Father, but by Me.” Jesus is telling us the way to the Father’s house is open through him. Because Jesus is both God and man, He gives us the invitation to Heaven. He Himself is the entry point, and He paid the full entrance price for us to get there with His own life. By uniting our lives with Jesus and becoming His followers, we are united with God. We can trust Jesus to takes us to the Father, and all the benefits of being God children will be ours.
Because Jesus is the only way to God the Father, there are those who resent Christianity because they think it’s too exclusive and too narrow. But the reality is the way is wide enough for the whole world if everyone would accept Jesus into their heart and life. But sadly, there are too many who still want to go their own way. Instead of worrying about how limited it is to have only one way to eternal life, we should be thanking God for providing a sure way to get to Him!
As the Way, Jesus is our path to the Father. He provides us with a clear direction to God because He is the reconciliation for our estrangement from God caused by sin. As the Truth, Jesus is the reality of all God’s promises. He provides certainty to people whose lives seem confused and unstable, and He illuminates our minds that were previously darkened by sin. As the Life, Jesus joins His divine life to ours, both now and for all eternity. He is the regeneration of a life previously dead by sin. Only Jesus offers full and complete satisfaction to those who follow Him. He is, in truth, the only living way to the Father.
Jesus tell us in Revelation 3:20, “Behold, I stand at the door and knock: if any man hear My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with Me.” Jesus knocks at the door of every heart because He wants to save us all and have fellowship with us. He patiently and persistently waits to get through to us – not by breaking and entering – but knocking. He allows us to decide whether to open the door of our lives to Him and welcome Him in.
Are you intentionally keeping His life-changing presence and power on the other side of your door? If you are, stop being a doubting Thomas. Instead, make a life changing decision to open yourself completely and fully to Him. When we make the choice to put our faith and trust in Jesus there is nothing that we need to worry about. He is the cure for our unsettled hearts because we can take anything and everything that troubles us to Him and He will take care of it. Only Jesus can and will change our life in ways that we never could have imagined, including allowing us to experience a kind of peace in our heart that we never knew was possible even in the chaos of our everyday life.
Until we meet again, may God bless you and keep you, may He shine His light on you, show you grace, and give you peace in all the days ahead.
