09-28-2025 How God Speaks

Text: Hebrews 1:1-3

People talk all the time.  There are numerous commentators on TV and the internet, teachers talk all day while in school, we’re all on social media posting endlessly, and groups of people often gather and talk for hours.  The problem is, too much of what people say isn’t worth saying or even hearing  Did you ever think what our endless chatter sounds like to the angels?  An old Puritan Peacher’s prayer asks two questions:  does God speak and, what does He say?  Well, this morning we’re going to see that God does indeed speak and that He has a lot to say.

Our text this morning is Hebrews 1:1-3 that says:  “ (1) God, Who at sundry times and in divers manners (meaning many times and in varied ways) spoke in time past unto the fathers by the prophets (a reference to Old Testament times), (2) has in these last days spoken unto us by His Son, Whom He has appointed Heir of all things; by Whom also He made the worlds; (3) Who being the brightness of His Glory (Jesus has the radiance of God’s glory), and the express image of His Person (tells us Jesus is the exact reproduction of God), and upholding all things by the Word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down on the Right Hand of the Majesty on High.” (reminds us that Jesus came to die on the Cross as the final acceptable sacrifice to God the Father so that we can be returned to the family of God).

The truth is, our God has never been silent.  He uses many creative approaches over long periods of time to send His message to His people.  Sometimes He uses angels.  We see one example in Genesis 18 that angels sent from God spoke to Abraham.  God spoke to Isaiah and Daniel in visions, to Jacob in a dream, to David through creation as we see in Psalm 8, He spoke personally to Abraham and Moses.  He speaks through the Holy Spirit as Peter tells us in I Peter 1:21:  “For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man but Holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.”

As we study our Bible we see the many prophecies that have been fulfilled and are being fulfilled.  They include: the prophecies about the birth, death, resurrection and second coming of Jesus, prophecies about the coming kingdom of Christ, the movement of nations, and the future of Israel.  Jewish people familiar with the scriptures wouldn’t have found it hard to believe that God was revealing His will, yet it was and is astonishing for them to think that God has revealed Himself by speaking through His Son, Jesus Christ.  Not only is Jesus the exact representation of the God who spoke to the people of Israel He is eternal, He worked with the Father in creating the world, and He is the full revelation of God.  We can have no clearer view of God than by looking at Jesus Christ.  He is the complete expression of God in a human body.

Today, God is speaking to us about what to look for in the last days in which we are living.  Daniel 12:4 tells us that there will be an explosion of knowledge.  Matthew 24:7 tells us there will be new diseases, signs in nature such as earthquakes various places, and nations rising against nations.  Matthew 24:12 speaks of the moral decline of mankind, Ezekiel 37 tells us of the return of the Jews to their homeland, and Revelation 13 tells us of technology coming to prepare the world for the Antichrist.  Everywhere we look God’s plan is being fulfilled.

But most important of all, God speaks to us and reveals Himself through His Son Jesus.  Jesus fulfills and finalizes God’s plans through the centuries.  Everything we need to know about God is made know to us when we accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior.  When we have Him, we have all we need to be saved from our sins and have a perfect relationship with God.  When we study the life of Jesus we learn about God’s grace, love, power, wisdom, and what His plans are for our future.  Jesus, the second person in the Trinity, was God’s agent in creating the world.  Colossians 1:16 tells us “For by Him all things were created...”  As followers of Christ, we may easily agree to this truth but sadly deny it in how we live our daily lives.  We may believe that Christ knows and controls the laws of Heaven pertaining to salvation and spiritual growth, but we often function as though our financial, family, or medical problems are beyond His reach to help us.  If Jesus could create the universe alongside God, then no part of our life can be out of His ability to control.  We must never doubt the wisdom of Jesus or the Bible’s guidance in dealing our complex problems of life.  There is no expert professor, doctor, lawyer,  financial advisor or even a trusted clergy person who knows more about our ultimate security and well-being than Jesus does.  This is why we must make it a habit to always go to Jesus first advice and help.  Talk to Him in prayer and listen to Him speak to you through your Bible and your heart.  He will always sustain you in times of stress and worry.  From that perspective you can evaluate all the other wisdom and help made available to us and make the appropriate decisions needed.

William R. Newell, a pastor who was born in 1868 and died in 1956 wrote that “Christ Himself, the Son of God, is God’s message.  Christ is the personal voice and eternal gift of God.”  On this day and every day of our lives, God is speaking to us through Jesus.  Jesus wants us to put away our sins and serve God every day in everything that we do.  We read in Genesis how God talked with Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden every day.  Do you ever think about what that must have been like?  The day is coming when we will be able to walk with Jesus in His new kingdom.  But that can only happen if we have allowed Him into our heart and life while living in the present world.  So many people haven’t yet taken that step.  They mistakenly think that a God of love won’t send anyone to Hell so all they need to do is live a good life and they will go to Heaven.  Sadly, it doesn’t work that way.  I keep going back to John 3:16 which is the guide for how to have eternal life.  When we truly accept and believe that Jesus is exactly Who the Bible says He is, we have accepted Him into our lives as Lord and Savior and now allow the Holy Spirit to guide us in everything that we do and every decision that we make.  When we do this our life becomes so much more fulfilling.  Our faith in what the Bible has promised us for our future changes our perspective on how we live each day and deal with the difficulties and problems that we will certainly encounter.  When people question us about how we can deal with what life throws at us, we should never be afraid to tell them that it’s because of what Jesus has done and use the opportunity to show them how they can have the same assurance. Keep listening because God never stops speaking.

Until we meet again, may God bless you and keep you, may He shine His light on you, show you grace, and give you peace in all the days ahead.
