03-01-2026 Come and Be Satisfied

Text: Isaiah 55:1-2

This morning we’re going to look at God’s invitation to come to Him and be satisfied.  We find it in Isaiah 55:1-2 that says:  “ (1) Ho, everyone who thirsts, come ye to the waters, and he who has no money; come ye, buy and eat; yea come, buy wine and milk without money and without price.  (2) Wherefore do you spend money for that which is not bread?  And your labor for that which satisfies not? Hearken diligently unto Me, and eat ye that which is good, and let your soul delight itself in fatness.”

Water in the Book of Isaiah and throughout the Bible is the common metaphor used for God’s divine grace.  The theme of coming to the Lord if you’re thirsty is also found throughout the Bible.  The Lord gave water to the Israelites when they were walking through the desert to Mount Sinai in Exodus 17:1-6.  The same offer is the key part of Jesus’ discussion with the Samaritan woman at the well in John 4:13-14.  John also records it at the final chapter of his revelation of Jesus in Revelation 22:17.  God wants us to come to Him so His Holy Spirit can satisfy us.  Isaiah is telling us that when we come to God we will satisfy our thirst, our hunger, and our soul.

Our text begins with Isaiah telling us in verse one that coming to God will satisfy our thirst.  We can all understand the craving for something to drink when we’re extremely thirsty and we all become especially thirsty in dry times.  Thirst also speaks of deep inner cravings.  Many people spend their lives and often a lot of  money-making unsuccessful attempts to satisfy their thirst and hunger for earthly satisfaction with things such as money, possessions, position, power, and prestige.  Some will look for satisfaction in alcohol, drugs, pleasure, or even pride.  But our Lord, just as He did for the Israelites, is still inviting us today to come and drink of the living water just as Jesus did when He told the Samaritan woman at the well that He could give that to her.

When we go to the Lord to satisfy our life’s hunger and thirst we’re looking for God’s divine grace.  Hunger alerts us to the need for nourishing food.  Spiritual hunger calls for the Bread of Life who is Jesus.  Jesus tells us in Matthew 5:6 that those who hunger and thirst for righteousness will be filled when they look to God and live for Jesus.  Looking to God for satisfaction will also result in daily blessings they never imagined were possible.  All human efforts to satisfy spiritual hunger with the things of this world will fail miserably.  Satisfaction of our spiritual hunger can only come from Jesus Christ.

People are also searching for satisfaction within their souls.  They work to make money to spend on things that they hope will satisfy their cravings.  Isaiah asks us in verse two why we should spend money on what isn’t bread and work for things that don’t satisfy us.  Instead, we should delight itself in fatness.  In other words, when we look to God for satisfaction of our needs, we will be completely satisfied and happy with the blessings and riches that only He can provide.  Satisfaction of the soul can only come through faith in Jesus.  All other paths to satisfaction are temporary and will ultimately lead to eternal damnation.  It has been said that the human soul so big that only God can completely fill it up.

As you read and study the Bible, you soon learn that many spiritual functions parallel physical functions.  Our bodies become hungry and thirsty, and so do our souls.  But our souls need spiritual food and water.  We would never think of depriving our bodies of food and water when we are hungry and thirsty.  Why then would we deprive our souls when we are spiritually hungry?  The living word, Jesus Christ, and the written word, the Bible, will always satisfy our spiritually hungry and thirsty souls.

Every person that has or will ever walk this earth is invited to God’s table.  He will always give us water to quench our thirst, nourishing food to satisfy our hunger, and spiritual food to satisfy our souls.  His feast is always free because Jesus paid the price when He chose to die on the Cross to redeem us from condemnation for our sins.  Everyone who chooses Jesus will find that their hungry and thirsty souls will always be satisfied because they can and will feel the presence and love that God has for everyone one of us.  They have help in times of need, hurt, confusion, and sadness.  They find strength when they feel they can’t go on any longer.  And they look forward to the day when they will stand before Jesus and be able to personally thank Him for what He has done for them.  Right now we can only imagine what that moment will be like.  But while I can’t describe that moment to you, I can promise you that it will come.

If you find yourself tired of searching for something that will bring lasting satisfaction in your life and you haven’t considered that Jesus can be the one to do that, I encourage you to take that leap of faith and ask Him to come into your life as your Lord and Savior.  When you do this, the Holy Spirit will take charge of your life and allow you to find the peace and satisfaction that will fill the deepest parts of your soul.  Don’t wait any longer.  God is waiting patiently for you accept His invitation to come to Him so He can satisfy your thirst as John tells us in Revelation 22:17.  Everyone who chooses to come will have the healing, love, freedom, refreshment, and newness of life that only comes from Jesus Christ.  We live in a world that is desperately thirsty for the living water of Jesus.  Let’s invite everyone to come and drink so they too can find satisfaction in this live and joy in eternal life in the kingdom of God.

Until we meet again, may God bless you and keep you, may He shine His light on you, show you grace, and give you peace in all the days ahead.
