Text: Numbers 10:29

Today we’re going to look at another Old Testament invitation to the people God loves.  Our text is from Numbers 10:29 that says: “And Moses said unto Hobab, the son of Raguel the Midianite, Moses’ father-in-law, We are journeying unto the place of which the Lord said, I will give it you; come Thou with us and we will do you good; for the Lord has spoken good concerning Israel.”  Notice that this is an invitation from Moses to a member of his family.  He’s asking his father-in-law to go to the Promised Land with him when he says, ‘come with us and we will do Thee good.’  It means it’s a good thing for him to come along.

The truth is everyone needs an invitation like this.  Moses gave it to a family member to encourage him to go to Israel, the nation that God would use Moses to deliver from slavery in Egypt.  They were headed to the Promised Land, a gift from God to former slaves when God said to them, ‘I will give it you’.  As Christian believers we also should be inviting our family, friends, and others we meet to join with us as members of the family of God.

The invitation used in today’s lesson is what the Church extends to all slaves to sin.  It’s an invitation that will take those who accept it to Heaven for eternity.  Heaven is a gift from God for His people.  John 14:3 tells us that Jesus is there preparing a place in eternity for all who will accept God’s gift.  Paul tells us in Philippians 3:20 that all former slaves to sin can now be citizens of Heaven.  He confirms this in Romans 6:23.

Moses first gave this invitation to his father-in-law because he loved him, he was part of his family, and he wanted him to share in the blessings that were ahead.  This invitation was given to one who would be helped by accepting it when Moses said, ‘come with us and we will do Thee good.’  Moses showed an honest desire to do something good for another person.  We do the same when we tell other about God’s loves for them.

God cares about every person we meet whether they’re family, friends, acquaintances, or even strangers.  Everyone we encourage to accept our invitation to salvation will receive good things from God when they accept what He is offering.  They will travel to Heaven with us, and they will share in God’s blessings on earth until they ultimately get there.

So who guaranteed this invitation?  Our text tells us ‘the Lord hath spoken good concerning Israel’ which was the destination of Moses’ invitation.  Israel’s future was as secure as God’s promises  That same God guarantees our offer of salvation to others when we invite them to know God and Jesus as their Savior.  In Moses’ day Israel was the Promised Land and a place of security with God.  Since the death of Jesus on the Cross, eternity in Heaven is the destination we are heading toward.

Hebrews 7:25 tells us that salvation is a promise from God, and no one can add to what Jesus did to save us.  Our past, present, and future sins are all forgiven.  The Old Testament high priest would go before God once a year to plead for the forgiveness of the  nation’s sins.  As our High Priest, Jesus is our advocate and the mediator between us and God.  He looks after our interests and presents our requests to the Father.  Jesus intercedes for us before God on a continuous basis assuring us that our sins have been fully paid for and forgiven.  This wonderful assurance frees us from gilt, the frustration of trying to be perfect, and the fear of failure.  We are never too sinful or too far away for Him to intercede for us whenever it’s necessary.  Not just once a year as it was for Israel.

God also promises to keep us safe from Satan from the moment we accept Jesus in this life until we get to Heaven for eternity.  Some people hope that they will receive eternal life.  But I John says 5:13 tells us we can know that we have it.  God’s promise gives us the certainty that we have eternal life through His Son Jesus.  This truth doesn’t depend on whether we feel close to God or far away from Him.  Eternal life comes from facts, not feelings.  We know that we have eternal life when we believe God’s truth.  If you aren’t sure that you’re a Christian and have this assurance, ask yourself if you have honestly committed your life to Jesus as your Savior and Lord and that decision affects your daily choices.  If your answer is yes, then you are indeed a child of God and can be assured of spending eternity in Heaven with God.

As Christians, we’re to extend the invitation to know God as we do to as many people as is possible.  We’re to let them know that God loves them and longs to do them good.  It’s not always easy to do this, but the truth is that we may be the only source of information about God and His love for all of us that some people may ever experience.  It’s important that we live a Godly life so that all people can see God and Jesus are part of us.  When we invite them to know more about God, how much He loves us, and that He loves them as well, we can’t make them accept the invitation, but we can plant a seed and pray that it grows within them to make them curious enough to want to know more about what we have come to know.  We’re doing good to those we invite to know our God and Savior Jesus.

Until we meet again, may God bless you and keep you, may He shine His light on you, show you grace, and give you peace in all the days ahead.
